YouTube community worried by Google deal

By Jake Coyle in New York | Thursday, 12 October , 2006, 10:26

But the cameraman poses a question to Chad Hurley, 29, and Steve Chen, 27, that goes unanswered: "What does [the deal] mean for the user community?"

That's what thousands of YouTubers are wondering. Will YouTube 2.0 still have room for the bedroom video makers that created the site's billion-dollar identity? Or will the little guy be crowded out by advertising and corporate involvement?

Google to acquire YouTube in $1.65 billion deal

Google confirmed speculations and announced that it will acquire YouTube in an all-stock deal valued at $1.65 billion. The deal, announced shortly after market close on Monday, aims to combine "one of the largest and fastest growing online video entertainment communities" with Google's "expertise in organizing information and creating new models for advertising on the Internet."
In an initial statement, Google said that the combined companies will focus on providing a "better, more comprehensive experience for users interested in uploading, watching and sharing videos, and will offer new opportunities for professional content owners to distribute their work to reach a vast new audience."
